āAll my life I have been surrounded by musiciansāmy grandparents were well-known musicians in the Dominican Republic. The love of music made me get into doing and producing, which I started not long ago. While I was in Belgium, about a year ago, I got the chance to meet very talented people who made me perceive the DJ career in a whole different way, where you constantly have to practice and better yourself to actually affirm yourself in the industry. I love the control you have with music and the power of making people move their bodies.
My career started in the Dominican Republic , a very machista country, where there are basically only male djs. There were only 1 or 2 female DJs who are ranked well in the country but now the scene has been rising and growing and I am seeing a lot of talented girls stepping up their game. If youāre a woman DJ, I would suggest finding ways to keep yourself motivated because there are very few of us in this scene. Stay true to who you are and keep on working hard. Know your worth and remind yourself that no matter where you come from you are powerful. Do things for yourself and not other people.ā
Do you have a role model?
āI have a lot of female role models in my life but one in particular is Nastia. I love that she stays true to her craft and her vision, even though she might not be a producer or have amazing composition skills, I like that she stays true of who she is and her values regarding music. She knows that and doesnāt lie about her tracks being ghost produced, she is a great DJ and thatās enough for her.
How do you handle stress during your performances?
I am a pretty anxious person, I accept it and itās part of who I am, so whenever I am at a gig I use my anxiety and stress to perform better. I want to prove how good I am at what I do, the fear of failing makes me do better in a way. Overall I do deep breathing exercises, and that really helps too. Surround yourself with positive people who push you to be a better person. There is so much space for you to become whoever you want to become.ā
What are your plans for the future?
āI am currently studying at SAE to improve my producing skills, but my goal is to get into the Electronic Music Academy, which opened about a year ago. I want to see where I can get with music. I want to experiment with more genres, not just house and minimal which are the main genres of my mixes. Producing and networking is my priority right now basically. I am so grateful to be able to grow in a city like Amsterdam because, in my opinion, it is such a diverse and open minded place with so much talent to offer.ā
